Research ProjectsIlia State University is the first university in Georgia focusing on a liberal education principles, which are much different from the old Soviet education system. The University views students and researchers as the “central players” in the education system, giving them the freedom of choice and possibility to better reach their full potential. The University carries out many motivating programs and initiatives for improving the quality of teaching and, at the same time, makes sure that graduates are equipped with essential knowledge and skills necessary for successful carrier. The University has an innovative approach to introducing elements of research into the higher education process. It is well known that in the Soviet education system higher education and research institutions function separately. Contrary to this tradition, Ilia State University actively develops all spheres of research, opens new labs equipped with modern technology, where masters and PhD students are able to participate in the ongoing research process carried out in their field of interest. Today, Ilia State University has the highest volume of quality research in Georgia. The University incorporates research institutes and centers equipped with the latest technology, such as: National Astrophysical Observatory in Abastumani, Seismic Monitoring Center in Tbilisi, Institute of Ecology in Kazbegi, Centre for Marine Research in Grigoleti and many more. Some of them are funded directly though the University, others are financed through the support of national and international funds. Thus indicating that both local and international parties value research projects carried at by the University.
